Eeeks. How has this happened? I know I'm not the most prolific blogger in the universe but this is ridiculous!

So, why the silence? Well, if I'd got my 5h1t together then I'm sure there'd have been more but.....................yeh yeh, same old same old.

If the truth be know (and I'm not one to shirk responsibility) it's my own fault. Bad time management primarily but also a blinkered professional pride that diverted my attentions from the things that matter most. I'm talking about family and friends!

At the top of this tree of family and friends there's the wife (She Who Must Be Obeyed) - the Mother of our 3 children. No matter what kind of a rut, what kind of problem or responsibility you have, if you have wife, husband or partner (I may be old but I'm not senile - yet) you have to remember the reason(s) why you got married.

If those reason are no longer valid (and I hasten to emphasize that's not the case in my situation) then you're on the wrong road. Looking around at people I know I can't see anything worse than trying to hang on to a relationship just for the sake of it. If there is still something there then it's worth putting in the effort to make it work!

Next layer down are the kids. I refer to my children as kids but in essence at least 2 of them are now young adults. OK, the eldest 2 still have a few "lessons of life" to learn but on the whole, they've done the probation and there now out in the "big wide world". But as a parent, they're always going to be you kids. No matter how old they are, No matter how far away they live. They'll always be your kids.

Then come your friends.

Some of them you don't see from one year to the next but you still have the odd (and I mean that in the old sense of the work) IM chat. They call you on your VoIP connection. But sometimes they won't even pick up the phone when you call, or they won't respond to your emails or IM pings. When that happens, you know something's gone wrong and it needs to be sorted out.

This started about half-an-hour ago as a quick post to let everyone know I was still alive and it's turned into something I don't often - if ever - write on the blog.

Suffice-it-to-say, make sure you get your priorities right. Work may be important but not more important than you family life.

Finally, I'd like to wish Rocky and Bob all the best in their new roles within IBM/Lotus. I can't say any more than has already been said - and mostly by people more noteworthy than me - but to me it shows IBM's commitment to the future of Domino and what's to come after it.

Best of luck and see you in Orlando in January!!!

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:

1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
2. An old friend who once saved your life.
3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car?

Think before you continue reading.

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first. Or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: "I would give the car keys to my old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams."

Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations. Never forget to "Think Outside of the Box."

....HOWEVER....

I got up at 5am (as is usual these days) to make an early start at Castle Greyskull. Went downstairs, made a mug of coffee, went into the office to check how the VMWare partition I'd been building was getting on. It's running 20 Domino servers so I'd left it running last night to get all the replication sorted out.

I'd also taken a Snapshot (a VERY handy facility) from VMWare before I'd completed creating all the servers just in case anything went wrong.

All was OK so I shut the partition down so I could copy it to my Laptop. When I checked the file system the total size of all the files was >35GB (twice the size I'd expected because of the Snapshot files. "So" I thought, "let me remove the Snapshot files 'cos I don't need them any more and that'll reduce the total time needed to copy them". So that's what I did!

Wrong!!!!!

The files with .UNDO. in their filename contains all of the updates SINCE the Snapshot was taken. If you delete these then your system will revert back to the point of the Snapshot. NOT WHAT I WANTED TO DO.

Oh, bugger!
