Both BMW Williams and Toyota cars have been excluded from the results of Sunday's F1 Grand Prix in Canada. Post-race scrutineering revealed that the brake ducts of both teams cars did not conform to FIA regulations. Williams seemed to accept the this whilst Toyota said they would appeal but were unable to meet the FIA deadlines.
Both team spokesman said that they gained no advantage in the race. but with the cars having to break from 210mph+ to around 80 at the end of the back straight I'd have to question the accuracy of that.
Both teams stated that they would never seek to gain an advantage by breaking the regulations but both of them seemed to say that they knew the ducts DID break the regulations but that they were within normally accepted limits.
The FIA regulations quite clearly state the tolerance for all measurements and the scrutineers found the ducts to be outside of the allowed tolerance. That means they're illegal. That means an exclusion. If you break the rules (or the law) you have to accept that if you're caught you're gonna get punished. It's black and white. There's no "almost legal" in life (or Formula !).
